Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi is an anime fighting/action video game by Namco Bandai Games based on the anime series Dragon Ball Z. Development was by Spike. It was released on October 28, 2011.
So, review time.
Pros:
- Very nice visuals (what game hasn't got that these days?).
- Interface, once mastered, works very well (not an easy feat, if you've watched the shows you know why).
- Sticks to TV anime (characters look and sound the same).
- Has every awesome character as playable (eventually).
- Team fights allow for even battles (novice player may have 5 fighters in roster while the better player only uses 2, ect.).
- Very smart counter system.
Cons:
- This game is so repetitive that it's appeal should last for about a day of solid play; a couple in extreme cases. It's the same thing over and over and over. Whether it be story mode or any other mode.
Sorry, I dropped the bomb. Why is the game-play so repetitive, when similar games like Mortal Kombat and Soulcalibur are not?
A: Because in games like MK and Soulcalibur, different characters have different attacks and abilities. But not in this game. The only thing that changes between characters are voice, appearance, and degree of power (slightly). And that's how it gets old really quick.
There are three things required to make this game awesome.
1) Knowledge and passion for the anime series.
2) Patience for learning a difficult but necessary interface.
3) An opponent of equal skill (in multiplayer).
This game can be fun. Really fun. In a really heated and even battle against a friend in multiplayer where the slightest mistake and waver of concentration can lose you the battle, it becomes really enjoyable. You feel pretty awesome when you pull off a Kamehameha to destroy your opponent when he had twice the health you did. And the counter system is a definite gem.
But with such a short appeal, why would a person buy it? They wouldn't (unless it's on sale on Black Friday); they would rent/or borrow it. Right after being pumped up from watching the show.
This game is perfect for renting.
